Rain Catchment: The Math Before the Barrels

Rain catchment is the rare preparedness project where people buy the hardware before running a single number. Barrels show up, gutters get modified, and only then does anyone ask how much water the roof actually produces and whether the storage matches it. Run the math first. It takes five minutes and it changes what you buy.

The one formula that matters

One inch of rain falling on one square foot of catch area yields 0.623 gallons. In practice you lose some to gutter overshoot, first flush, and evaporation, so plan on capturing about 80 percent. The working formula:

Catch area (sq ft) x rainfall (inches) x 0.623 x 0.8 = gallons captured

Catch area is the roof's footprint, length times width of the house as seen from above, not the sloped surface area. Pitch does not add catch; the rain falls on the footprint.

What a real roof produces

Take a 1,500 square foot footprint in a place that gets 40 inches of rain a year. That roof sheds roughly 30,000 gallons annually. Even a single ordinary one-inch storm delivers about 750 usable gallons, which is more than most households would store in a year of buying barrels.

This is why the math comes first: the constraint is never the supply. It is storage and, in a real outage, treatment. A 55-gallon barrel fills in the first few minutes of a decent storm and then spends the rest of the event watching water run past it.

Sizing storage honestly

Match storage to your dry gap, not to the storm. Look at your local rain pattern and find the longest stretch you realistically go between collecting rains, then multiply by your daily requirement. A household drawing 8 gallons a day through a two-week dry stretch needs about 110 gallons of storage; two linked barrels get you there, and an IBC tote gets you there with room to spare. Elevate the storage and gravity becomes your pump.

Treatment is not optional

Roof water carries whatever the roof carried: bird droppings, pollen, shingle grit. For gardens and sanitation, use it as it comes. For drinking, it goes through the same filter-plus-chemical pipeline as any other untrusted source. A first-flush diverter, which dumps the initial dirty runoff, and gutter screens upstream of it are cheap adds that dramatically improve what reaches the barrel.

Check your rules first

Rainwater collection is legal in most of the country and actively encouraged in much of it, but a handful of states regulate capacity or method, and some HOAs have opinions about visible barrels. Check your state and local rules before installing. This is a five-minute search that beats an expensive argument.
