The Tool
Preparedness
Plan Builder
Most preparedness advice is a list of products. This starts from your household instead, computes what you actually need, and only then tells you what covers it.
Every number shows the rule that produced it. Nothing you enter is stored, sent, or tied to an account.

Your Household
Nothing here is sent anywhere or saved. The math runs in your browser.

Water
The first thing to run out and the fastest to become fatal.
Stored potable water
Critical28gallons
2 people x 1 gal/day x 14 days
More options at CampSaverBest overallReliance Aqua-Tainer 7 GallonThe standard stackable water container. Seven gallons is the most weight one person can still move.
UpgradeAugason Farms 55 Gallon Water Storage BarrelFor the 30-day-plus tier, barrels beat jug math. Needs a pump and a place to live.
Water filter, gravity or pump
Critical1unit
Stored water runs out on a fixed schedule. A filter converts an ongoing source into drinking water and is the single highest-leverage item on this list past day three.
More options at CampSaverBest overallSawyer Squeeze Water Filter0.1 micron, rated for 100,000 gallons, works inline or gravity. The default answer for a reason.
BudgetLifeStraw Personal Water FilterOne per go-bag. Not a household solution, but the cheapest real insurance there is.
UpgradeKatadyn Gravity BeFree 10LHousehold-scale gravity filtration. Ten liters filters while you do something else.
Chemical treatment backup
Important1bottle
Redundancy for the filter. Filters clog and crack; tablets do not have moving parts.
More options at CampSaverBest overallKatadyn Micropur MP1 Purification TabletsThe backup with no moving parts. Kills viruses that filters pass.
Food
Calories you can actually eat, plus a way to heat them.
Shelf-stable calories
Critical56,000kcal total

More options at CampSaverBest overallMountain House 3-Day Emergency Food SupplyThe taste benchmark for freeze-dried. Start here before committing to buckets of anything.
BudgetAugason Farms 30-Day Emergency Food SupplyThe best calories-per-dollar in a single bucket. Bland is fine when it is the backup.
UpgradeReadyWise 124-Serving Food SupplyDepth for the 30-day-plus tiers. 25-year shelf life, stackable buckets.
Familiar shelf-stable food
Important3weeks of pantry staples
Rotating grocery-store food covers the first stretch and keeps morale intact. Freeze-dried buckets are for depth, not for Tuesday.
More options at AmazonStock thisCanned Chicken Breast 12 PackProtein your household already eats, no rehydration required.
Stock thisPeanut Butter 40 oz JarThe highest calorie density on the grocery shelf, and nobody has to be talked into it.
Stock thisOld Fashioned Rolled Oats 10 lbBreakfast for a month for a few dollars, cooked with nothing but hot water.
Off-grid cooking and fuel
Important1stove plus fuel blocks
Most stored food still needs heat and water. Size fuel to duration.
More options at CampSaverBest overallJetboil Flash Cooking SystemBoils water in about 100 seconds on a small canister. Freeze-dried food is only as good as your ability to heat water.
Power
Enough to keep light, comms, and cold storage alive.
Battery power station
Important1,500watt-hours minimum
Roughly 1500 Wh/day for lights, phones, radio, and a fridge. Sized for one day of autonomy, recharged by solar.
More options at CampSaverBest overallJackery Explorer 1000 v2Covers the computed daily load for most households with room to spare, and the ecosystem panels just work.
BudgetEcoFlow River 3 PlusEnough for lights, phones, radio, and a CPAP overnight. Charges to 80 percent in under an hour when grid power flickers back.
Solar recharge capacity
Important400watts of panel
Assumes about four usable peak-sun hours per day. Storage without generation just delays the problem by one day.
More options at CampSaverBest overallJackery SolarSaga 100W PanelPairs directly with the Explorer line. One panel covers the computed recharge for a modest load.
UpgradeGoal Zero Nomad 100Chainable and rugged. The pick if you went Yeti on storage.
Fuel generator
Important1unit plus stabilized fuel
Viable once you have outdoor space with real clearance. Run it well away from the structure and never in a garage, open door or not.
More options at CampSaverBest overallHonda EU2200i Inverter GeneratorThe quiet, boring, start-every-time benchmark. Costs more, resells for most of it.
BudgetChampion 2500W Inverter GeneratorCO auto-shutoff built in, at a third of the Honda's price.
UpgradeWestinghouse iGen4500 Inverter GeneratorEnough headroom to carry a fridge, a window unit, and the panel of a small house.
Medical
The category people under-build until they need it once.
Trauma and first aid kit
Critical1compact kit
Scaled to a 2-person household. One kit stays home, and past five people a single kit gets stripped too fast to be useful.
More options at MedicBoxBest overallMyMedic MyFAK First Aid KitReal trauma coverage, not band-aids in a zipper pouch. Buy once, restock forever.
BudgetAdventure Medical Kits Mountain BackpackerHonest coverage for a small household at half the price. Add a tourniquet.
UpgradeNorth American Rescue CAT TourniquetThe one every kit should add. Buy from a reputable dealer only; the counterfeit problem is real.
Prescription buffer
Critical14days of medication
Capped at 90 days because that is the practical ceiling most pharmacies and insurers will fill in advance. Talk to your prescriber well before you need it, not during.
No product link. This one is a conversation with your pharmacy.
Over-the-counter resupply
Important1restock
Pain relief, anti-diarrheal, antihistamine, and rehydration salts. Dehydration from an ordinary stomach bug is a far more likely emergency than anything dramatic.
More options at AmazonStock thisIbuprofen 200mg Tablets 500 CountPain and fever control is the OTC line that gets used first and runs out first.
Stock thisImodium A-D Anti-Diarrheal CapletsDiarrheal illness plus no plumbing is how ordinary outages become medical ones.

Communications
Getting information in and coordinating your household.
NOAA weather radio, hand-crank or battery

More options at OpticsPlanetBest overallMidland ER310 Emergency Crank RadioNOAA alerts, hand crank, solar, USB charging out. The category benchmark.

No product link. Write it down and put it in every wallet and bag.
Light, Heat & Shelter
Staying functional in your own home without utilities.
Headlamps
Important2units
One per person. Hands-free light is the difference between doing a task in the dark and holding a flashlight in your teeth.
More options at NightstickBest overallBlack Diamond Spot 400 HeadlampThe reliability pick at the sane price point. Buy one per person, standardize the batteries.
UpgradeNightstick USB-578XL HeadlampDuty-rated and rechargeable, from a maker that only does lights.

More options at NightstickBest overallGoal Zero Lighthouse 600 LanternRuns off the same ecosystem as the power station, hand-crank backup built in.
Battery stock
Important24cells

More options at AmazonStock thisEnergizer MAX AA Batteries 48 PackThe bulk pack for the size everything should be standardized on.
Stock thisEnergizer MAX AAA Batteries 32 PackFor the headlamps and remotes that refused to standardize.

More options at OpticsPlanetBest overallCleanwaste GO Anywhere Toilet KitsGelling bags rated for actual disposal. This is the line item nobody buys and everybody needs.

More options at AmazonStock thisWet Ones Antibacterial Hand Wipes CanisterHand hygiene with zero water cost. The workhorse of no-plumbing sanitation.
Stock thisPurell Advanced Hand Sanitizer 1 Liter PumpCheapest infection control per use in the whole plan.

Documents, Cash & Go-Bags
The parts of readiness that are not gear.
Document and identity backup

IDs, insurance, deeds, medical records, and photos of your property, on paper and on an encrypted drive. Insurance claims and aid applications both run on documentation you may not be able to reprint.
More options at OffGridUpgradeSLNT Faraday Dry BagWaterproof and signal-proof for the encrypted drive copy of everything.
Small-denomination cash
Important200dollars
Card networks and ATMs fail with the grid. Small bills, because nobody will be making change.
No product link, for obvious reasons.
Go-bags
Important2bags
Every plan needs a leave-immediately branch. Sheltering in place is the default, not the only option, and the decision usually comes with minutes of warning.
More options at Uncharted Supply Co.Best overallUncharted Supply Seventy2 Survival SystemA complete, thought-through 72-hour system. Buying the bundle beats assembling your first bag part by part.
Budget5.11 Rush24 2.0 BackpackThe build-it-yourself platform. Cheaper if you already own half the contents.
UpgradeGrab Bags Emergency Go-BagPre-built by people who obsess over this exact problem.
These are planning figures for an ordinary household, not medical, engineering, or legal advice. Water and food baselines follow published Ready.gov household guidance; everything else is an explicit modelling choice stated in the basis line under each number, so you can see which assumption to argue with. Check local code before installing generators, fuel storage, or water tanks.
