Preparedness
Plan Builder

Most preparedness advice is a list of products. This starts from your household instead, computes what you actually need, and only then tells you what covers it.

Every number shows the rule that produced it. Nothing you enter is stored, sent, or tied to an account.

Water

The first thing to run out and the fastest to become fatal.

Food

Calories you can actually eat, plus a way to heat them.

Power

Enough to keep light, comms, and cold storage alive.

  • Battery power station

    Important

    1,500watt-hours minimum

Roughly 1500 Wh/day for lights, phones, radio, and a fridge. Sized for one day of autonomy, recharged by solar.

    Best overallJackery Explorer 1000 v2

Covers the computed daily load for most households with room to spare, and the ecosystem panels just work.

    BudgetEcoFlow River 3 Plus

Enough for lights, phones, radio, and a CPAP overnight. Charges to 80 percent in under an hour when grid power flickers back.

    UpgradeGoal Zero Yeti 1500X

Fridge-capable for real outages. Goal Zero's chaining and panel options are the deepest.

  • Solar recharge capacity

    Important

    400watts of panel

Assumes about four usable peak-sun hours per day. Storage without generation just delays the problem by one day.

    Best overallJackery SolarSaga 100W Panel

Pairs directly with the Explorer line. One panel covers the computed recharge for a modest load.

    UpgradeGoal Zero Nomad 100

Chainable and rugged. The pick if you went Yeti on storage.

  • Fuel generator

    Important

    1unit plus stabilized fuel

Viable once you have outdoor space with real clearance. Run it well away from the structure and never in a garage, open door or not.

    Best overallHonda EU2200i Inverter Generator

The quiet, boring, start-every-time benchmark. Costs more, resells for most of it.

    BudgetChampion 2500W Inverter Generator

CO auto-shutoff built in, at a third of the Honda's price.

    UpgradeWestinghouse iGen4500 Inverter Generator

Enough headroom to carry a fridge, a window unit, and the panel of a small house.

Medical

The category people under-build until they need it once.

  • Trauma and first aid kit

    Critical

    1compact kit

Scaled to a 2-person household. One kit stays home, and past five people a single kit gets stripped too fast to be useful.

Best overallMyMedic MyFAK First Aid Kit

Real trauma coverage, not band-aids in a zipper pouch. Buy once, restock forever.

    BudgetAdventure Medical Kits Mountain Backpacker

Honest coverage for a small household at half the price. Add a tourniquet.

    UpgradeNorth American Rescue CAT Tourniquet

The one every kit should add. Buy from a reputable dealer only; the counterfeit problem is real.

  • Prescription buffer

    Critical

    14days of medication

Capped at 90 days because that is the practical ceiling most pharmacies and insurers will fill in advance. Talk to your prescriber well before you need it, not during.

No product link. This one is a conversation with your pharmacy.

  • Over-the-counter resupply

    Important

    1restock

Pain relief, anti-diarrheal, antihistamine, and rehydration salts. Dehydration from an ordinary stomach bug is a far more likely emergency than anything dramatic.

Stock thisIbuprofen 200mg Tablets 500 Count

Pain and fever control is the OTC line that gets used first and runs out first.

    Stock thisImodium A-D Anti-Diarrheal Caplets

Diarrheal illness plus no plumbing is how ordinary outages become medical ones.

    Stock thisBenadryl Allergy Antihistamine Tablets

Allergic reactions do not wait for the pharmacy to reopen.

    Stock thisDripDrop Electrolyte Powder Packets

Rehydration salts turn the water you stored into actual recovery.

Communications

Getting information in and coordinating your household.

  • NOAA weather radio, hand-crank or battery

    Critical

    1unit

The one-way channel that keeps working when the cell network is saturated or down. Hand-crank removes the battery dependency.

Best overallMidland ER310 Emergency Crank Radio

NOAA alerts, hand crank, solar, USB charging out. The category benchmark.

  • Two-way radios

    Important

    2handhelds

One per adult, minimum two. Useful the moment anyone leaves the house.

Best overallMidland GXT1000VP4 GMRS Two-Way Radios

Sold as pairs, weather channels included, and GMRS gives you legal power headroom with one cheap license per family.

  • Written family communications plan

    Critical

    1printed copy per person

Out-of-area contact, two meeting points, and phone numbers on paper. Costs nothing and survives a dead phone.

No product link. Write it down and put it in every wallet and bag.

Light, Heat & Shelter

Staying functional in your own home without utilities.

  • Headlamps

    Important

    2units

One per person. Hands-free light is the difference between doing a task in the dark and holding a flashlight in your teeth.

Best overallBlack Diamond Spot 400 Headlamp

The reliability pick at the sane price point. Buy one per person, standardize the batteries.

    UpgradeNightstick USB-578XL Headlamp

Duty-rated and rechargeable, from a maker that only does lights.

  • Area lanterns

    Recommended

    2units

Roughly one per occupied room, minimum two.

Best overallGoal Zero Lighthouse 600 Lantern

Runs off the same ecosystem as the power station, hand-crank backup built in.

    More options at Nightstick
  • Battery stock

    Important

    24cells

Standardize on one or two cell sizes across every device you own. Mixed formats are the reason half of most kits are dead when opened.

Stock thisEnergizer MAX AA Batteries 48 Pack

The bulk pack for the size everything should be standardized on.

Stock thisEnergizer MAX AAA Batteries 32 Pack

For the headlamps and remotes that refused to standardize.

    UpgradePanasonic Eneloop Pro Rechargeable AA

Pairs with the power station: batteries that recharge beat batteries that deplete.

Unglamorous, and the fastest route to a secondary crisis.

    Important

    56waste bags

    2 people x 2 uses/day x 14 days

Best overallCleanwaste GO Anywhere Toilet Kits

Gelling bags rated for actual disposal. This is the line item nobody buys and everybody needs.

  • Hygiene supplies

    Important

    2person-kits

Soap, sanitizer, wipes, and feminine hygiene. Infection control is the unglamorous thing that decides how a long outage actually goes.

Stock thisWet Ones Antibacterial Hand Wipes Canister

Hand hygiene with zero water cost. The workhorse of no-plumbing sanitation.

Stock thisPurell Advanced Hand Sanitizer 1 Liter Pump

Cheapest infection control per use in the whole plan.

Stock thisDr. Bronner's Castile Soap 32 oz

One bottle covers body, dishes, and laundry, which matters when rinse water is rationed.

Documents, Cash & Go-Bags

The parts of readiness that are not gear.

These are planning figures for an ordinary household, not medical, engineering, or legal advice. Water and food baselines follow published Ready.gov household guidance; everything else is an explicit modelling choice stated in the basis line under each number, so you can see which assumption to argue with. Check local code before installing generators, fuel storage, or water tanks.
